Getting Around

Transport in Galway

Bus Services

Galway has two bus services - City Direct www.citydirect.ie and Bus Eireann www.buseireann.ie. Information is available from the school or your host family as to which service is most suitable for you. There are weekly and monthly bus tickets available.

Bicycle Hire

Go green and save money! As part of GCI's Environmental Policy we encourage students to hire bicycles. Information on the best bicycle hire option is available in your information pack and at reception. As well as being an environmentally friendly way to explore Galway city, cycling is the cheapest form of transport. A substantial discount is available with a GCI student ID card.

Mobile Phones

Mobile phones offer students the opportunity to stay in touch with home while in Galway. Students may purchase an Irish SIM card for use in their own mobile phone. This offers students the benefit of texting and talking to each other in Galway at local network rates. International Call Cards are widely available. Ask at reception for the best deal for you. Galway is a very safe city, however, be aware of your own personal safety.

Insurance & Health

All students should provide their own health and travel insurance. EU students should obtain their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their local Social Welfare Office before departure - see www.ec.europa.eu This only entitles you to free emergency hospital care and attendance at certain doctors. It does not cover elective or dental treatment. Any person undergoing medical treatment should bring sufficient medicine to cover their stay in Ireland and a copy of their prescription. We strongly advise students to insure against loss of fees, personal effects etc. that you may incur due to cancellation or early departure.
