Shopping in Galway

Shops

Galway is a great place for shopping and with the lovely, pedestrians-only Shop Street right in the heart of the city you can easily find everything you need! Shops in Galway usually open from 6.00 to 18.00. There are late opening hours on Thursdays & Fridays and during the summer months. The shops are considerably quieter on a Sunday than on a Saturday. Most of the shops are in the city centre, but there are larger shopping centres if you travel a little outside the centre. The Galway Shopping Centre is on the Headford Road and is only a short walk east of the centre.

Opening Hours

Many shops are open on Sundays but they usually open a little later in the morning. Some shops do not trade on Sundays . Usually supermarkets are open, but they will close earlier on Sundays.

Supermarkets and convenience stores open as early as 6.30 and usually open until 20.00. Corner shops often will open until about 23.00. Many petrol stations have shops attached and open late. The petrol station across the road from Galway Cultural Institute is open 24 hours a day.

Christmas Day is the only day when everything is closed. Good Friday (The Friday before Easter) has more shops open every year, but was traditionally a day when everything closed. Pubs are closed on Christmas day.

Markets

There is a wonderful farmer's market on Lombard Street in the city centre and sells organic food, fish, meats, cheeses, locally produced crafts, clothing and art. It's open on Saturdays from 9.00 until 17.00 and is well worth a visit. Sometimes stalls open on Sunday as well but it is more rare. For the Galway Arts Festival, the market is open for the entire time that the festival is on.
