Best Summer Festivals in Galway 2026 | Music, Arts & Events for GCI Students

Posted 18 May 2026

Summer is one of the best times to experience Galway. The city is full of festivals, live music, sport, theatre, art and seaside events. For GCI students, Galway’s summer festivals are also a great way to practise English, meet new people and enjoy local Irish culture. Whether you love music, football, theatre or relaxed days by the sea, there is something happening across Galway and Salthill throughout the summer.

If you are studying English in Galway, summer festivals are a fun way to practise your English outside the classroom while discovering the best of student life in Galway. Here are just a few of the events to look forward to.

Why Galway is the perfect summer city for students

When summer arrives, the city comes alive with a vibrant new energy. The sun is out (now and again), there are tourists around, and Galway people are out lying on the grass, walking the prom and watching sport by day, then heading to gigs and theatre by night. Attending events, or even volunteering at them, is a great way to improve your English, make new friends and have fun. Between music, sport, theatre and art, Galway has so much to offer in the summer.

Galway Early Music Festival

Kicking off the summer, the Galway Early Music Festival runs from 22 to 24 May. This festival celebrates early forms of music through dance, concerts, street performances and more. Each year, performers in medieval outfits can be seen roaming the streets and spreading merriment. This year the festival celebrates its 30th anniversary, welcoming internationally acclaimed choirs and other artists from near and far. Keep an eye on Shop Street for impromptu performances.

Salthill Fives Football Tournament

After enjoying some culture, sports fans can head to Salthill for one of Galway’s favourite football events. The Salthill Fives is back this summer, running on 30 and 31 May 2026. This popular five-a-side tournament, run by Salthill F.C., promises to be the biggest yet. This year welcomes men’s teams alongside U13 boys’ and U13 girls’ cups. Each men’s team is guaranteed three games, with the winners taking home €2,000 and the runners-up €500 — so there are big prizes on offer and plenty of excitement for spectators. The Salthill Fives has been running for 46 years and is a true part of Galway history. Matches take place in Salthill Park.

An Tóstal Salthill Festival and Salthill Kite Festival

The Salthill Fives takes place in the picturesque setting of Salthill, home of our own GCI, which is also home to the An Tóstal Salthill Festival on 23 and 24 May. This is a maritime festival of currach racing. Currachs are the traditional boats of Galway, which you might recognise from the statue in Eyre Square. The Salthill Kite Festival is also part of the festivities, so it is the perfect weekend to sit out on the prom with a 99 ice cream and enjoy the free spectacles.

Galway Folk Festival

Once you have spent a few weekends by the sea watching the boats and the football, you will be ready for the vibrant summer nightlife set alight by the Galway Folk Festival, taking place from 3 to 7 June. Expect intimate gigs, foot-stomping sessions and inspiring performances from both established legends and rising stars. Acts such as The Divine Comedy, Damien Dempsey and Lisa O’Neill will take to the stage and share the magic of folk music with Galway audiences. Galway is always a thrilling spot for live music, but the folk festival is when the gigging scene is at its peak. The festival also includes many free events in Monroe’s Tavern, on The Market Stage and more.

Galway International Arts Festival

The folk festival will leave you wanting more music, and luckily you will not have long to wait, thanks to the world-famous Galway International Arts Festival. This renowned festival attracts spectators and artists from all over the globe, and this year it takes place from 13 to 26 July. Each year, Galwegians love to see the return of the Big Top, the festival tent that becomes a temporary landmark. There will be music from the likes of Patti Smith, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and The Flaming Lips. The festival gallery always features intriguing work from international artists, and the theatre programme often features well-known actors. In the past, the festival has welcomed Robert Sheehan and Cillian Murphy. The festival garden also takes over Eyre Square, where visitors can enjoy local food, live music and a lively city-centre atmosphere.

The full programme has just been released, and we cannot wait to book our tickets and explore the festival galleries.

Tips for enjoying festivals as an English language student in Galway

Make sure to book your tickets early, as many of these popular events sell out well in advance. Festivals are one of the best ways to practise your English in real-life situations: chat to people in the queue, order at a food stall, or volunteer at an event to meet locals and other students. Many festivals also run free events, so you can enjoy the atmosphere even on a student budget. And because GCI is based in Salthill, you are never far from the sea, the city centre or the heart of the action.

You can find out more about studying and living here on our English courses in Galway, Student life, Accommodation and Activities in Galway pages.
