Quarantining Information, procedures and resources
What you have to do before you arrive into Ireland from abroad
The government advises against all non-essential international travel.
All travellers coming into Ireland must:
- complete a COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form
- provide evidence that you have a negative or ‘not detected’ result from a COVID-19 Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test carried out no more than 72 hours before you arrive into Ireland, or have evidence that you are exempt from this legal requirement, see www.gov.ie and the HSE website
- Once you have arrived here you must comply with the health restrictions in place in Ireland
What to do if you travel to Ireland from high risk ‘category 2’ countries
If you travel to Ireland from any of the high-risk countries, you must complete mandatory hotel quarantine
If you do not fulfil the legal requirement for mandatory hotel quarantine you are committing an offence, and can be fined up to €2,500 or get a prison sentence of up to 6 months, or both.
Very limited exemptions apply to travellers from the requirement to complete mandatory hotel quarantine.
Your quick guide to Ireland’s new quarantine system
Where you are coming from | Measures in place |
If you come into Ireland from any country deemed 'high risk' | You must complete a 14-day mandatory quarantine in a hotel |
If you come to Ireland without a negative or 'not detected' PCR test | You must complete a 14-day mandatory quarantine in a hotel |
If you come to Ireland from any country not deemed 'high risk' | You must quarantine at home provided you have a negative or 'not detected' PCR test |
Restriction of movements/quarantine
If you are travelling into Ireland you are requested to restrict your movements for 14 days. This means avoiding contact with other people and social situations as much as possible:
- Do not go to school or work
- Do not use public transport
- Do not visit others / do not go to house viewings
- Do not have visitors at your home
- Do not go to the shops or pharmacy unless it's absolutely necessary
- Do not meet face-to-face with older people
This period of restricted movement can be shortened if you receive a negative/’not detected’ Covid-19 test result, a minimum of five days after your arrival in Ireland.
The request to restrict movements does not apply if you travel from green regions.
Please carefully read the full official guidelines here if you travel to Ireland from high risk ‘category 2’ countries.
If you travel to Ireland from any of the high risk countries, you must complete a 14-day quarantine period which must be undertaken at the address specified on the COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form. You must complete the full 14 days of quarantine - regardless of whether you have a negative test result.
You are also required to complete the COVID-19 Passenger Locator Form.
